Home Care Challenge: The Week We Take a “Break” (Sort Of)
Spring Break.

The idea of truly taking a break—sitting on the couch and doing absolutely nothing—sounds nice in theory, but in reality? Nearly impossible. My version of “resting” usually looks more like impulsively deciding to move my boys into the same room on a random Friday (because why not?).
So, while this week’s home care challenge is about stepping back, it’s less about putting our feet up and more about catching up, resetting, and making space for the next season of home projects.
Wrapping Up Unfinished Tasks
Over the past few weeks, we’ve tackled everything from deep cleaning to organizing seasonal items—but somehow, a few lingering to-dos always remain.
For example, I started swapping my kids’ wardrobes from winter to summer, yet there are still a few last pieces that need to make their way up to the attic. This week is the perfect time to close the loop on those unfinished tasks, whether it’s packing away the final bits of winter gear, labeling storage bins, or finally dealing with that growing pile of paper clutter.
Planning (and Rethinking) Bigger Home Projects
Taking a “break” also means slowing down to plan ahead—especially for those bigger home projects on the horizon. Right now, we’re researching and pricing a few updates, including replacing our deck with a composite material for lower maintenance. But after getting quotes, we realized that investing in a major deck renovation doesn’t make sense since we likely won’t be in this house for more than five years.
Instead, we’re shifting focus to projects that will add value and improve daily life in the short term—like finally upgrading our window treatments. When we first moved in, I was six months pregnant, and we went with the most budget-friendly option just to get something on the windows. Now, it’s time for a more intentional update.
The Potty Training Pivot
Because no week is complete without an unexpected parenting curveball, we also attempted potty training our youngest. We confidently used the same three-day boot camp method that worked like a charm for our first… only to realize, very quickly, that what worked before was not working now. If you have multiple kids, you already know—what works for one will probably not work for the next.
So, after an eventful weekend, we hit pause. We’ll regroup, adjust our approach, and try again in a few weeks. (I’ll dive into our potty training journey in a separate post for those interested—because this one’s about home, not bathroom struggles.)
Giving Yourself Credit
At its core, this week is about balance. It’s a chance to slow down, revisit loose ends, and be intentional about where we’re putting our energy.
Sometimes, “taking a break” doesn’t mean doing nothing—it means shifting focus, catching our breath, and recognizing how much has already been accomplished. Even if it doesn’t feel like it, the little things—putting away the last of the winter gear, measuring for new blinds, deciding not to spend on a big renovation—add up.
So, whether you’re taking an actual break (tell me your secrets) or using this time to reset, give yourself credit. Keeping a home running is a constant work in progress, but every small step counts.
Here’s to a well-earned breather—whatever that looks like for you.
A week to reset, wrap up unfinished tasks, and make space for what’s next.
